If you are unsure about the future of your marriage, you may benefit from the experience of other couples. Research shows that there are several things most likely to result in a marriage ending.
Here are some of them:
You don’t look for the middle ground
If you both hold polar opposite views on things, getting along can be impossible. Maybe you were willing to work toward compromise earlier on in your marriage, but if one or both of you has lost that willingness to search for the middle ground, then it’s a bad sign.
You criticize each other a lot
You are both going to do things that annoy each other, and you are both going to make mistakes. That’s natural. What’s not natural is going straight for the jugular every time the other does something you consider wrong. Nor is always communicating in a way that makes it clear you think the other person is the problem and they are the one who needs to change.
You live in the same house but no longer share your lives
Are you simply sharing a roof, or are you sharing your lives? Do you still go out together and hang out together around the house? Or do you each live very separate lives now?
It’s healthy to have different interests and to spend time apart. However, if you never want to spend time together anymore, then consider if you still have a marriage.
If you are slowly realizing that your marriage has run its course, then it’s never too early to find out more about how a divorce would work.
