Tyrese Gibson awarded joint custody of his daughter

Tennessee residents who enjoy following celebrity news may be interested to learn that Tyrese Gibson was granted joint custody of his daughter on Nov. 17. The Fast and the Furious series actor had been fighting to see his daughter since his ex-wife claimed that he had physically abused the child.

In September, Gibson's ex-wife obtained a temporary domestic violence restraining order against Gibson after she claimed that he had physically abused the daughter. As a result, she was granted physical and legal custody of the girl. Gibson denied the allegations. Just a week prior, Gibson posted that he had suffered a complete meltdown after experiencing some adverse reactions from psychiatric medication.

The Department of Child and Family Services reportedly investigated the case but ultimately found nothing wrong. As a result, Gibson was awarded joint custody of the daughter on Nov. 17. The joint custody agreement was scheduled to begin in January. The judge ultimately denied the ex-wife's request for a permanent restraining order. The ex-wife did not make any comment following the judge's decision.

In the state of Tennessee, child custody decisions are made with the best interests of the child in mind. While some divorcing parents are able to work together to create a parenting plan, others have trouble establishing custody arrangements that are beneficial for the children. In these cases, a family law attorney could negotiate with the other party to draw up a detailed parenting plan that outlines who the children will be with and when. In the event that one parent is abusive or cannot provide proper care for the children, the attorney may help the other parent seek primary custody.
