Types of adoption

In Tennessee, a child may be placed for adoption by the biological parents or by a guardian or guardian ad litem. Some state agencies can do so as well.

Private adoptions are allowed in Tennessee. This includes what is known is "direct placement"". This means the birth parents will place the child directly with adoptive parents. Another type of adoption is an agency adoption. These may be adoptions done through private companies or state agencies.

An adoption intermediary is a person who facilitates the adoption in some way. They are permitted in Tennessee although an intermediary cannot place a child. Usually, the intermediary is a lawyer who prepares legal documents and may assist in other ways, such as attending court hearings.

The Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children deals with children being adopted by parents in other states. The aim is to protect children and provide support services. An ICPC adoption begins with the state where the child lives sending information to the other state. Social services in the state where the parents live will do home visits and other investigations to ensure that the placement is suitable.

A person who is going to be involved in an adoption in any way may want to talk to an attorney about it. There may be a number of situations in which an adoption may be required. Parents may be unable to care for a child, and family members might need to step in. A stepparent may want to adopt a spouse's child. The adoption might also be a more traditional one in which a child that has been placed with an agency is up for adoption. An attorney may be able to review the legal issues and assist in completing the needed documentation.
